‘Local Bike Shop Day’ to Celebrate Cycling and Active Travel

Stirling MP Alyn Smith has encouraged Stirling residents to support their local bike businesses on Local Bike Shop Day, and consider cycling more this coming summer.

Local Bike Shop Day takes place on Saturday 4th May this year. Working with the Association of Cycle Traders, the campaign seeks to raise public awareness of the great independent biking shops available in local areas, and promote safer cycling.

Stirling is home to several well-respected independent cycling businesses, encompassing repair, retail and rental – as well as the well-used NextBike hire scheme. The latest Walking and Cycling Index update from active travel organisation Sustrans found that 18 million trips were made by walking and wheeling last year, bringing an economic benefit to Stirling of £27.2 million.

An investment of £9.5m has been funded by Sustrans, through Transport Scotland, and the Scottish Government, as well as £258,000 from Stirling Council’s developer contributions allocation to install two protected travel corridors, connecting the city centre with both the University of Stirling and the Forth Valley College Stirling campus.

Stirling MP Alyn Smith said:

‘Cycling not only boosts our local economy, but helps keep us fitter, healthier and more active for longer. Stirling is leading the way in fostering a cycling friendly community. We’ve a range of brilliant independent businesses right across the region, boosted by record investments in cycle infrastructure and active travel promotion. I’m very proud of the cycling ecosystem we’re building, boosted no less after we hosted the 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships last year.

‘On Local Bike Shop Day this year, be sure to pop in to your local cycling businesses and lend them your support. There are several rental schemes active too if you want to try before you buy. Here’s to a summer of safe, active cycling from residents and visitors alike!’
