Local MP Alyn Smith has welcomed the election of Humza Yousaf as Leader of the Scottish National Party, and expressed his confidence he will build support for independence over the coming months and years.

Humza Yousaf secured the backing of the SNP membership after the resignation of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. This week in the Scottish Parliament will see MSPs cast their own votes to confirm the new First Minister, with Cabinet confirmations held later in the week.

Humza Yousaf takes the reins at a pivotal moment in the independence campaign, with public polling suggesting both an appetite for independence, as well as a desire to focus on improving vital public services amidst the Westminster cost of living crisis.

Alyn Smith MP said:

‘Congratulations to Humza on his election as SNP Leader, and as he said so himself: let’s get on with the job.

‘I’ve been struck throughout the campaign by Humza’s strong focus on the priorities of the people of Scotland.

‘Right now across Stirling and the Forth Valley that’s the cost of living crisis Westminster, Covid and Brexit have inflicted upon us, defending Scotland’s democracy from the Westminster power grab and persuading more people that independence in Europe is our best future.’
