Alyn Smith MP and Evelyn Tweed MSP have praised University of Stirling student Duncan Scott, and his teammate Tom Dean, for achieving Olympic silver and gold medals respectively in the Men’s 200m Freestyle swimming event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Submitting parliamentary motions in both Holyrood and Westminster, Mr Smith and Ms Tweed recognised the hard work and dedication each athlete has demonstrated to reach this point in their career – and how they remain excellent ambassadors for sporting excellence.

On Wednesday 28th July, Duncan and Tom, along with James Guy and Matthew Richards, went on to win a gold medal in the Men’s 4x200m swimming freestyle relay.

Evelyn Tweed MSP said:

‘Both Tom and Duncan have done us all proud, securing Olympic medals despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. The University of Stirling has a strong track record of sporting excellence, utilising academic and practical facilities to build a supportive environment for our athletes. I wish Tom and Duncan, as well as the wider team including James and Matthew, well in their future careers and endeavours.’

Alyn Smith MP said:

‘Scotland has a proud history of sporting excellence, and I’m very happy Duncan has managed to play a huge role in securing medals. The University of Stirling has offered a great environment to nurture natural talent, and my compliments go to the academic and facilities staff. Duncan, Tom, James and Matthew can hold their heads high, giving their all for well deserved sporting glory.’
