Stirling Council First in Country to Rollout Discretionary Fund

Stirling Council has agreed the rollout of its Discretionary Fund to support businesses through the Covid-19 crisis, making it the first local authority to do so in Scotland.

The Council received a grant from the Scottish Government of £836,303. This is part of the £30 million that the Scottish Government has committed to local authorities nation-wide to help mitigate the short term financial challenges being experienced by businesses impacted by pandemic restrictions.

The funding was provided to local authorities to distribute as they deem necessary, and at their discretion.

Commenting, Stirling Council Leader, Councillor Scott Farmer said:

“We’ve made sure that the primary focus of our local authority has been to utilise whatever resource we have available to support our local economy, local services, and local communities throughout this crisis. This £836K fund is a significant amount, on top of existing support mechanisms, that will give the Council flexibility in offering support to struggling businesses.”

Alyn Smith MP said:

“This is really welcome news for businesses across Stirling. There’s a great level of need out there in our communities, and I’m heartened to see support rolled out to boost our local economy. It’s the duty of governments across these islands to strain every sinew to get support to where it’s needed.”

Bruce Crawford MSP said:

“Governments at all levels have been working hard to make sure support is smoothly rolled out to businesses. These remain deeply uncertain times, and Stirling’s businesses have played their part in protecting public health by following the evolving guidance. It’s only fair they’re supported appropriately.”
