MSPs Bruce Crawford and Keith Brown, alongside Stirling MP Alyn Smith, have welcomed students back to the University of Stirling and Forth Valley College, for the start of the academic year.

Both educational institutions have taken important steps to ensure the safety of staff and students, including enhanced hygiene measures, physical distancing and changes to modes of learning both in person and online.

The start of the semester marks the end of a difficult summer, marked by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and altered learning delivery methods across Scotland.

The management teams of both the University of Stirling and Forth Valley College, alongside the Stirling Students Union and the Forth Valley Students Association, have all played crucial roles in preparing their respective institutions for the new academic year.

Bruce Crawford MSP said:

‘There’s always a real buzz in the air at this time of the year, when college and university students resume their studies and bring fresh vibrancy to Stirling.

‘Understandably, there’s been concern over the impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic on students, staff and the community. University and college leaders have done a fantastic job in taking the necessary steps to keep people safe, and I pay tribute to their diligent efforts to keep their student learning on track, and communities safe.’

Keith Brown MSP said:

‘Students play a key role in both the local economy, and are valued members of our communities. The current rise in cases currently across the UK are closely monitored by the Scottish Government, Stirling Council and public health teams, who have a strong partnership with leaders in our educational institutes.

‘I look forward to the coming term time, and hope our students make fond memories. They’re most welcome in Stirling, and I’m sure they’ll play their part and take the necessary steps to help stop the spread of this awful virus.’

Alyn Smith MP said:

I’ve a great working relationship with the University management team and Students’ Union, and warmly welcome students both new, and returning, to their home away from home.

‘The University, and Forth Valley College too, play a valuable role in the local economy. As we look to economic recovery and transition post-Covid, both bodies will be crucial to the future of Stirling’s communities, and indeed to the wider Forth Valley area.’
